Anchoring Bangladesh’s Logistics

FULL STEAM AHEAD
From the start of its business in 2000, DSV has scaled up its operation by several folds. The industry as a whole has witnessed Infrastructural developments over the years, and the impact of knowledge and skill levels of the human resources has propelled the company to the next level. The need for international logistics and supply chain management has increased in the country with increasing trade activity. This industry has come a long way in terms of the Air & Sea Capacity availability in the market. Danusha Gunawardena, Country Manager of DSV says, “But still there is a big need for further infrastructure development to keep up with the trade and economic growth that is happening in the country.”

FROM BRIDGES TO PORTS
The Padma Bridge project as a standalone project will create huge growth in the local economic activity and will increase efficiency in the current domestic transportation sector. This will also help to attract more cargo towards Mongla port eventually making it a strategic location. Mr. Danusha comments, “With the development of the Padma bridge the port needs to ensure that it develops its infrastructure to the next level to keep up with the demand and opportunities that will be created through this huge project.” Commenting on Bangladesh’s busiest port, Mr. Danusha explains, “Our business being in Air & Sea logistics, Chittagong port plays a pivotal role in our operation and the services rendered through the port will in turn help to serve our customers.” DSV containers are moving in and out of the port on a daily basis and it’s an ongoing process with steady increase in day to day activity at the Chittagong port.

CATERING TO CLIENTS
DSV conducts its business mainly in Air and Sea International logistics. They have become more system driven. Mr. Danusha explains, “the resources that we are looking for needs to be able to handle our systems and also needs to be able to communicate with our offices around the world.” The company is constantly on the lookout for skilled individuals with the right attitude. Mr. Danusha says, “as we are in to international business we need to be able to keep up with a 24 /7 operation as different parts of the world works at different times of our clock.”

DSV caters to clients needs when providing a solution since the needs could be different from one client to the other based on the products and service offering to its ultimate customer. The company looks at their client’s supply chains to understand what benefit they can offer, which is a combination of cost effectiveness and punctuality. Mr. Danusha explains, “we create products keeping two aspects in mind – we focus on the amount of money we can save while delivering the cargo in the least amount of time.”

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES
The government and different authorities are trying to create the most conducive environment for business and different industries which is a positive sign. Bangladesh has shown the fastest growth and has been able to top the list in the region for several years now. “This shows how vibrant the Bangladesh economy has been and the potential it has as a country,” Mr. Danusha says. While the industries and the manufacturing sector has experienced phenomenal growth, the country has to still work on further development on enhancing its logistics and related service standards, which will eventually help the country experience exponential growth in the manufacturing industries and all other trade activities.

INNOVATING SUCCESS
DSV is a Multinational company with global ranking of number 4 in the freight forwarding industry. Mr. Danusha says, “Although we are a multinational company we run business and operate to suit the local customers needs thus we have the flexibility to change our offering and alignment to suit local needs and that has helped us immensely to be close to our customers and understand their needs better and ultimately to serve them better.” Although DSV relies on digitization to achieve maximum efficiency through their systems, Mr. Danusha explains, “we still feel that human touch is necessary and we give that importance to our customers through personnel intervention when required and also the flat and simple structure helps us to make quick decisions to serve our customers.”

DSV has been a growing company and aspires to keep that momentum going. Mr. Danusha says, “The way way do business might change over the years with changes that is taking place in the fast changing environment and DSV will change to meet those needs and will be in the forefront and remain relevant.” DSV is in the business of creating value for their customers , employees and its shareholders.
