Digital World 2015 promises state emphasis on local tech advancements

By Wafiur Rahman

Drone copters are now popular globally for capturing aerial videos and photos. The youth in Bangladesh are also designing the most modern modules to grab global attention. A group of students from United International University yesterday presented two such projects at Digital World 2015, the country’s largest technology fair. Md Miraj Hossain and Sarem Din Nasouri, final year students at the university’s electrical engineering department, demonstrated a drone copter and a surveillance robot. They built the machines that can be controlled wirelessly, while the visuals can be seen on monitors. The drone copter, said Hossain, can be used for various purposes like border security; the surveillance robot in disastrous situations where people cannot reach.

Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Division and Bangladesh Association of Software & Information Services (BASIS) jointly organised the four-day mega event – Digital World – at the BICC to showcase technology-based innovations and achievements aiming to unlock economic potential of IT sector. Digital World is the largest digital expo of Bangladesh.

ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, while addressing the press, said: ‘We want the world to know what we are doing, how we are doing it and what more can be done. And Digital World is a great way to showcase our achievement. Also we think this is a great way to entice business. So we want to make the event a successful one. Hence we are tying up with all the relevant associations and bodies.’

During the question answer session, State Minister revealed that last year’s Digital World spendings were around Tk. 9 Crore of which Tk. 7 Crore was provided by the government and Tk. 2 Crore were raised from private entities and sponsors.

Key advancements made so far

The political commitment of the government to build an ICT-based society is good. Several ICT related laws have been passed in last couple of years which are essential to regulate this sector. The government has decided to build a tech park in Dhaka to facilitate the progress of ICT sector. But still there are many deficiencies in the regulatory framework and infrastructure development of ICT sector. Overcoming these deficiencies is the biggest challenge for implementing the vision of a ‘Digital Bangladesh’.

The earning from outsourcing IT jobs has increased by 56% in 2013, said sources in the Bangladesh Association for Software and Information Services (BASIS). In the 2011-12 fiscal year, the earning was USD 70.6 million, while it was USD 46.35 million in the 2010-11 fiscal year, referring to the latest available data of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). According to BASIS officials, at present there are more than 500 software companies in the country. Of these, about 178 are doing outsourcing jobs.

The country’s ICT export exceeded 100 million US dollars in the last fiscal year and BASIS is now working with 1 billion US dollars. Software leaders hoped that this industry will contribute 1 percent of GDP in coming years. Apps development also was most talked and inspiring among the youth. With the growth of smartphone market the mobile app development sector will grow phenomenally, as more subscribers will be downloading and using the apps on their phones.

M-Commerce and e-commerce made easy

In last five years perhaps this sector has seen the most significant growth. There was a concern whether general people would find it appealing to buy online but the growth rate of ecommerce sites has diminished that concern. Toady ecommerce sites are mushrooming to cater different aspects of individual needs.

On the other hand, M-commerce or Mobile Commerce refers to wireless electronic commerce used for conducting commerce or business through a handy device like cellular phone or Personal Digital Assistant (PDAs). In other words it is the ability to conduct commerce using a mobile device, such as a mobile phone, a Personal digital assistant (PDA), a Smartphone, or other emerging mobile equipment such as dashpot mobile devices It is the next generation wireless e-commerce that needs no wire and plug-in devices. Mobile commerce is usually called as ‘m-Commerce’ in which user can do any sort of transaction including buying and selling of the goods, asking any services, transferring the ownership or rights, transacting and transferring the money by accessing wireless internet service on the mobile handset itself.

What next

At the inauguration session, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, ICT state minister, said students used to travel across the country for admission (in universities), but now they can apply through mobile short messages. Paper filing systems are turning into virtual filing systems in the country, which is curbing corruption, he mentioned. The government has set up 500 WiFi routers in public offices and distributed 18,000 tablets among public officials.
