Blazing infernos at Chawkbazar and FR Tower sent shockwaves throughout the nation and made us realize how ill-prepared we are when it comes to fighting fire outbreaks. Lives were lost and dreams were shattered. As people were jumping through the windows of the fire-affected building in Banani, all we could do was watch while wailing, shedding tears, expecting some divine intervention or some miracle. The damage is irreparable and the loss irreplaceable. We have been pushed into positions where we have to ask ourselves are we going to pay such a toll for the sake of development of cities which harbor skyscrapers that have been built flouting building codes. We have mulled over the fallacy of human nature that fuels greed and corruption, resulting in the untimely and tragic deaths of so many lives. This special story sheds lights on the current condition of firefighting capabilities of our buildings and what more needs to be done to make us fire-ready.
