A Seamless Experience

Sustainability may be a hotly debated issue right now. As shoppers, we care more than usual about garments. We know and we care about quality. We purposely purchase things that we think will last better. At times, we even deliberately bolster a specific art or industry. But on the other hand, we buy more clothes than most. When storing excess clothes is a regular topic of discussion, we can’t be the most frugal or focused on consumers. Furthermore, more critically, what would be a good idea for us to improve? Bangladesh is known around the world for its ready-made clothes. The custom tailoring business is only run by a few. In a short time, Dapper Bespoke, a company focused on establishing custom-made formal men’s wear with precise tailoring has made its name in the segment. IBT sat down with Dapper Bespoke to learn how we as consumers can do our part in upholding sustainable fashion and looking good while doing it.

Patience is a virtue — but that doesn’t seem to apply when it comes to fashion, where we want everything quick, fast and in a hurry. While we can’t deny the instant gratification that comes from being able to buy anything our hearts desire, sometimes it’s nice to just slow down. If you want clothing that would last you a long time, where you can show your individuality, something that is made specifically for you, your body, your shape, your personality, and your idiosyncrasies, then you have to have a little patience. It is a process to enjoy not ‘get over with.’ Making quality garments, making individual patterns, finding your style, building a wardrobe takes time.

Bespoke, or custom-made fashion, is the ultimate personal style upgrade. Most people were unaware of how jackets and trousers should fit their bodies or how to dress for their respective body shapes, postures, etc. or even what to wear for different occasions. And that’s where Dapper Bespoke came in. Having met a lot of people wearing ill-fitted suits made from some random tailor in Bangkok, with either the sleeves too long or the shoulders too big, Dapper Bespoke with their knowledge on how a suit should fit a person’s body, their know-how on different designs and styles, what fabric will best suit specific occasions or climates and what fit will most flatter a person’s physique began educating their clients. Most clients did not have the idea that there were so many things to consider when making a custom made or bespoke suit and it’s something they didn’t even experience from tailors abroad. From the choice of cloth through to such details as the number and positioning of pockets and the shape and size of the lapel, the customer has the freedom to design the suit or garment that will meet his or her needs.

The order of a bespoke garment starts with a conversation with the client. First, they try to understand the client’s objective-the purpose of the garment: Is it for business, leisure, or sports? Is it for formal or informal occasions? Based on the client’s body structure (height, weight, complexion, etc.) they suggest certain recommendations about fabric selection as well as the cut and style. After further discussion on the merits and disadvantages of various styles and cuts, they agree on a specific style suitable for the client. Then the client selects the fabric of his/her choice – their recommendations also weigh in the fabric selection. Following the design process, complete measurements are taken and they compile as much information as possible to be translated into a unique individual pattern. At this stage, they have all the information they need to start tailoring the suit. They do not accept any order without the provision of trials or fittings. They believe that bespoke tailoring is the process of attaining perfection and that cannot be attained without repeated fittings/trials.

The word bespoke is derived from the verb “bespeak”, to speak for something, in the specialized meaning “to give the order for it to be made”. The term bespoke in fashion is reserved for individually patterned and crafted men’s clothing, analogous to women’s haute couture, in contrast with mass-manufactured ready-to-wear. Bespoke clothing is traditionally cut from a pattern drafted from scratch for the customer, and so differs from ready-to-wear, which is factory-made in finished condition and standardized sizes, and from made to measure, which is produced to order from an adjusted block pattern. The tailors at Dapper Bespoke were already pretty experienced before they were hired. With careful guidance, the tailors perfected and honed their skills to offer consumers tailored garments that can confidently stand the tears of time.

Despite catering to the timeless class of a perfectly tailored suit, Dapper Bespoke has a strong finger on the digital pulse of the nation. Consumers can view their elegant array of suits on their Instagram and Facebook platforms. Dapper Bespoke diligently wants to make consumers more aware of different styles, designs, fabric and all the things they might want to consider when ordering their next garment. They are working on their website at the moment where they plan to post articles on everything menswear, maybe even womenswear as well.

Dapper Bespoke urges consumers to focus on finding the best quality you can afford, especially when it comes to the wardrobe staples especially the items you want to hang onto for years, buy the best you can. Having something made by a bespoke tailor is like commissioning a chest of drawers from a carpenter or ordering cufflinks from a jeweler. It is simply a wonderful experience that most men who love clothes will enjoy. Finally, it is an opportunity to own something that is designed and created just for you.
