Macquarie University offers a specialisation in human resource management on Coursera. The specialisation is called Leading: Human Resource Management and Leadership Specialization. Through this specialisation, you can learn to take an analytical approach to motivate your staff, harness your team’s diversity, and evaluate leadership theories to develop your personal leadership skills. Here’s a roadmap to guide you through the four courses in the specialisation.

Organisational Design: Know Your Organisation

This course will prepare you to tackle the challenge of keeping your organisation sufficiently agile while still delivering on its strategy. You will get formal definitions of organisational culture, structures and systems. You will further learn to identify misalignment issues, assess the degree of misalignment between culture, structure, people, practices and systems, and present concrete, suitable, and feasible changes to resolve the issues.

Organisational Behaviour: Know Your People

The course focuses on case studies of advanced leadership strategies and challenges you to consider how these might apply to your own workplace. You will understand why personality, values, perceptions and emotions are important parts of diversity and inclusion, and learn about team-driven approaches. By the end of the course, you will be able to explain different motivational characteristics to get the most out of your employees and analyse the implications of workplace diversity, team dynamics and team composition on organisation performance.

Adapt Your Leadership Style

The course takes an unapologetic approach to explore organisational misbehaviours such as cynicism, apathy, bullying and disengagement. Traditional, autocratic, job-centred and controlling leadership styles are challenged, while transformational, authentic and inclusive leadership styles are taught and encouraged. These remediation alternatives will also help establish your foundations for increasing your organisation’s agility. You will learn to analyse these post-industrial forms of participative and self-organising leadership and examine how they might enable or disable effective cross-functional teamwork.

Difficulty : Beginner – Intermediate
Duration : 31 hours (approximately)
Modules : 6
Rating : 4.8/5 (770 ratings)
Review : Encourages self-analysis and self-reflection to correct leadership styles. Offers critiques and different perspectives to the usual learnings on the internet.

Visionary Leadership, Identity & Motivation: Become a Meaning Maker

In this course, you will explore how leaders can create a compelling vision and communicate it, and how they create meaning and make work more meaningful. You will look at the role the brain and the body play in processing meaning, and how this can inspire your employees to follow you and your vision. Additionally, you will learn to evaluate, create and apply strategies to leverage meaning-making through branding. You will also learn to situate discussions of meaning-making within the broader social contexts and concerns.
