If we look back at our socio-economic development over the last decade, a few milestones from a trail of robust growth trajectory stand out from the rest. Undoubtedly, the Bangladesh government’s initiative of Digital Bangladesh has been a game-changer for the country. It has enabled us to attain remarkable growth numbers and make extraordinary improvements in the aggregate human development index. According to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the total number of internet users in the country now stands at 12.48 crore. From health to entertainment, mass digital adoption has facilitated improvements in every aspect of our daily lives. Through e-commerce, Bangladeshi consumers can now access quality products and services at their fingertips. It has enhanced the consumer experience by ensuring efficiency, transparency and innovation. Although the Bangladesh government’s digital drive has been a crucial catalyst in the e-commerce revolution, the industry stands on a solid foundation laid by Daraz Bangladesh Ltd.

A Star is Born
Daraz Bangladesh Ltd. began its journey in 2014 with just five employees and one website under the hood. Although it was not the first entity to formally operate an e-commerce platform in the country, Daraz inspired the belief that the sector could be a viable option for consumers and businesses. With a diverse range of products and an interface that was way ahead of its time, it was able to attract the attention of an increasingly prosperous tech-savvy population. Daraz Bangladesh Ltd. became the engine that would steer Bangladesh’s e-commerce sector through the maturity phase.

The Takeover
In 2018, Daraz was officially taken over by the largest online trading platform in the world, Alibaba. For obvious reasons, the acquisition is often regarded as a watershed moment for Bangladesh’s e-commerce sector. It has created a new benchmark for quality and opened endless possibilities for the industry. As Alibaba began to transform Daraz’s modus operandi, its impacts started to shape our e-commerce industry. The same year, the company inaugurated the largest e-commerce warehouse in Bangladesh and launched Daraz Express (DEX) and their first-ever Eleven Eleven (11.11) campaign.

Innovating New Experiences
Over the years, Daraz has been playing an instrumental role in creating a robust digital ecosystem in Bangladesh, enabling customers around the nation to reap the benefits of digitisation while shopping online. It never paused in pursuing its goal of creating a sustainable ecosystem for all. Daraz is frequently designing campaigns targeted at different groups with different categories of products so that everyone has something to grab from the platform. At the same time, it is integrating better delivery strategies and monitoring the supply-chain management for optimum efficiency. For example, DEX is equipped with a comprehensive coverage ability with the capacity of daily 300,000+ plus nationwide delivery within 48 hours, monitored by 2500+ operators/employees and delivered by 5000 riders.

Going Above and Beyond
At the height of the pandemic, when businesses across the country were staring at an uncertain future, Daraz stepped up and facilitated support for SMEs across the country. The specially curated ‘Daraz-Seller Moitree’ program helped over 30,000 SMEs continue their business throughout the pandemic. Subsequently, with the ‘Stay Safe, Let Us Deliver’ motto, Daraz provided contactless delivery, safeguarding customers from COVID-19.

Towards A New Era
From humble beginnings, Daraz Bangladesh Ltd. has grown to become a household name in Bangladesh. Its existence has been pivotal to Bangladesh’s e-commerce industry, and the company continues to set new benchmarks for efficiency and competence in the sector. As the company enters the latest phase of its expansion in South Asia, it has marked the occasion with a brand new aesthetic. The new brand look and logo signifies the elements that have always been part of Daraz’s DNA –progress, innovation, exploration, and discovery. At the same time, it also represents a shift to a more personal experience that will allow Daraz to create greater connectivity between buyers and sellers on the platform. The company now emphasises the dream of a ‘Shopping Odyssey’ with a box of infinite possibilities. It is innovating to make e-commerce a key part of people’s daily lives and enhance their online shopping experience.
